[Review] Chapter 4: the Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood

TMI_logo

Looking back through the previous 3 episodes you could say that Guybrush has been there and done that.  Now it’s time for him to stand trial and be brought to justice for everywhere he’s been and everything he’s done.  What?!? He’s found  La Esponja Grande and is going to cure the pox.  What could possibly be the crime in that?  Hit the jump to find out, realatively spoiler free.

the Story

Guybrush_on_TrialYou’ve probably been wondering what happened to Guybrush since the surprising (or maybe not) end of Chapter 3.  Morgan had a job to do and now that they’ve escaped the leviathan she can get back to business.  She delivers Guybrush to DeSinge but he is soon trapped by a curse that leads him directly to the Courthouse on Flotsam Island.  Familiar faces from past Monkey Island games make appearances in this game.  Some of them bring charges against Guybrush which include fabrication of False Ninja Dave Action Figures.  Guybrush will have to overcome yet another obstacle to finish a quest he started 3 episodes ago.  The twists and turns of this story had me saying I was right but it also had me thinking I didn’t see that coming.  This Episode really answered a lot of questions.  It also raised a few questions and nicely sets the stage for the final installment.

the Rest

De_Singe_Duels_Elaine The name of this episode alone is enough to spark an interest.  After playing  the previous games, I was curious how this title would fit into the series.  Turns out it does that quite well.   I don’t have as much to say about the story because if you’re vested in 3 episodes you probably already know you owe it to yourself to play this.  The puzzles are relatively new in their execution but the core concept is the same.  It could be me, but I found that the dialog seemed to flow a little better for me allowing me to figure out the puzzles a little easier.  I didn’t get as stuck on this one as I did previously.  You’d think by now the puzzle solving creativity would be tapped but it still feels pretty fresh.  I think that the story makes up for any of the games short comings.  There were a few wow moments and the anticipation to play the final episode was put over the boiling point when I finished.

Once again I’d recommend giving the series a try.  PC gamers or gamers on the Nintendo Wii can check it out. (I may have to try them on the Wii) You can pick up the series and all the details on Telltale Games website and, of course, find all the hints and help you could ask for in their forums.

If you’ve been playing the Tales of Monkey Island let us know you’re out there. Write to us at feedback at breakingthegame dot com. :)
