I can’t really imagine how this is going to work out, but it’s just as bizzare as their proposed Vitality Sensor in my opinion. We’ll see what the future holds for us gamers, but I like to envision a bunch of drunken gals having a Nintendo Rodeo night.

I’ve been wondering what the fallout was going to be when the rumor that Dana White had issued warnings to the managers of UFC fighters that if any of them signed with EA they would be forever banned from the UFC. Thanks to a friend of mine (PeeKnuckle) for linking me to this article. In it Dana White gives his side of the story with some compelling reasons behind why he did that. I also recently listened to this podcast featuring Tim Sylvia who is a former UFC veteran and title holder. In the podcast he comments on the EA game which he says that both him and Randy Couture have signed to be in. I’ll list some bullet points on both articles and tell you who I think will benefit the most from this.

UFC President Dana White

Dana’s Article :

UFC tries to make a deal with EA on a game, EA says no way José and then turns right around and announces a release of an MMA game allegedly slapping the UFC in the face

UFC feels cheated because of the sour deal between them prompting Dana’s warning

THQ publishes UFC Undisputed 2009 and does well

Dana confirms that no UFC fighter will be signing with EA without risking their relationship to the organization

Quote Dana: “I’m telling you straight-up, I’m at war with them right now. That’s how I look at it. … [If you sign with EA] You won’t be in the UFC. … I’m in the mixed martial arts business. EA isn’t. … EA doesn’t give a [expletive] about mixed martial arts. They made that very clear.“

Tim Sylvia:

Explains he’s happy to no longer be fighting in the UFC because he is his own fighter now and his persona, actions and attire are no longer dictated by the UFC

He says that both he and Couture have signed with EA. He also says that EA paid him well to be in the game and when he was in UFC Undisputed THQ paid Zuffa well. See what I did there?

He said it was easy for THQ to make the game because all they had to do was go the UFC and with 160 fighters under contract they have a full roster and only deal with one organization.

The interviewer makes a comment that one fighter in UFC 2009 was upset because he was featured in the highlight reel at the games opening getting knocked out and that he didn’t get a dime for it.

Peter Moore, EA Sports President

A couple of talking points. Randy Couture is under contract with the UFC and is slated to be in UFC 102. He has a relationship with EA since he was in Red Alert 3 for the PC so it’s not a first time game for him. If it’s true that’ll be interesting to see how it pans out. Both companies are marketing machines in their own right but despite Dana’s threats I think the UFC has met their match when it comes to EA. Here’s my take, there are plenty of fighters in the UFC who have had rocky relationships with Dana. They ultimately end up coming back because as of now if you don’t fight in the UFC anyone who doesn’t follow MMA doesn’t know you. I think this will change with the help of EA. Fighting organizations are gaining popularity, that’s why Zuffa purchased pride in order to douse the competition. Fighters who are leaving the UFC are starting to fight in other programs such as Affliction or Strikeforce. Most of the UFC fighters came from one of these organizations before fighting in the UFC so they already have a fanbase and connections there. I think some of this will end up in court but, if a fighter can be in a game and make a good chunk of change and their relationship with the UFC is bad then I see them leaving. If that happens they will be banned and forced to fight in another league, since they have made a name for themselves they might put some of these lesser known leagues on the mainstream map. A lot could happen here but I think EA has the edge, there’s plenty of fighting clubs that would love a piece of UFC pie and if EA starts pulling good fighters away from the UFC with $$ then they just might have a shot at a slice. I’ve started a thread here on our forums, please sign in and weigh in on your thoughts. A lot of this is up in the air right now and this is just an observation on my part, ultimately time will tell.
